Join the News Leaders Association in a free conversation, co-sponsored by NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, on how news leaders can better support their LGBTQ+ journalists.
Pride Month is unfolding at a momentous time. A year after the Supreme Court declared a major (and surprising) anti-discrimination victory for queer employees, a trend of laws and hate crimes targeting transgender Americans continues. The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn some comparisons to the AIDS crisis and the government’s slow response to it. And while cultural representations of queer Americans have improved by some measures, homophobia and transphobia remain a potent global force. A panel of LGBTQ leaders in American media will discuss how our newsrooms have covered some of these developments, and also the challenges and opportunities facing LGBTQ+ journalists.
We’ll be joined by Sharif Durhams, managing editor at The News & Observer and president of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists; Jamie Stockwell, deputy national editor at The New York Times; Neal Broverman, editor-in-chief at The Advocate; and Neda Ulaby, correspondent at NPR. Sewell Chan, NLA board member and editorial page editor at Los Angeles Times, will moderate the session.
The Transformative Transparency Exchange is a monthly event series that brings transparency to issues that take underrepresented people out of the industry. This monthly facilitated group will give support and space for underrepresented journalists through panel discussions and open dialogue.
This event will not be recorded.
